A well-educated City Region
Almost a third of people in the region are educated to degree level. With highly respected and acclaimed universities to choose from, many companies invest here due to our academic research programmes and deep pool of graduates.
Each year over 250,000 students from all over the world study at the 12 universities in our wider catchment area with graduate retention rates some of the highest in the country.
We have four top performing universities right in the heart of the City Region. The University of Liverpool has 91% of its research ranked world-leading or internationally excellent and is driving the City Regions’ knowledge economy through close collaboration with fellow universities, industry and the NHS. It also has one of the oldest law departments in the UK with a research-led programme providing a rigorous intellectual as well as practical introduction to the profession and leading to real-life impact on policy.
Liverpool John Moores University offers over 200 undergraduate courses which through its strong links with industry includes specialist courses in areas such as International Banking and Finance at the Liverpool Business School along with a popular Executive MBA programme.
Liverpool Hope University is ranked second in the UK for graduate employability due to its tailored graduate programme for SMEs in everything from Software Engineering and Human Biology to Digital Creativity and Film Production.
Edge Hill University holds the accolade of Modern University of the Year in the Times/ Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022 and has a strong focus on developing skills with real world application.

Shaping the skills of the future
Across the City Region there is a coordinated approach by industry to collaborate with education partners to design programmes and funding to develop our talent, giving equal importance to technical and academic qualifications.
As only one of its kind in the UK, our Skills for Growth plan is designed to address skills shortages and ensure talent is readily available to businesses and investors when needed.
With almost 1 million residents of working age living directly in the City Region, we have agreements and plans in place to support our key sectors and those in it. This includes our £8.1m Skills Bootcamps for training in construction, digital, engineering, green skills, HGV drivers, and rail, a great way for businesses coming to the region to find local talent.
We also work closely with schools within the region – helping to shape curriculums and point students in the direction of thriving sectors. The Liverpool City Region Careers Hub – powered by Growth Platform, is currently engaged with 134 schools and over 100 Enterprise Advisers. Partnerships include All About STEM, Shaping Futures, and Elevate EBP – who connect young people with business professionals.
